The replacement of the up platform fence at Thornton Station was finally completed on Saturday the 4-Jun-2011 after months of hard work.

The original built during the 1930’s and stretching over 300 foot in length was in a sorry state as can be seen in the photograph opposite.

Eighteen months later with a full compliment of 800 railings and a fresh coat of paint it has been restored to its former condition.

The project would not have been possible without the generous community chest grant supplied by Welsh Power based at NPL estates, paint donated by Refurb and the discount extended to us by Workshop DIY.

The workforce who turned out in all weathers had individual tasks to achieve, the most important was performed by our younger colleagues who were dispatched to retrieve the tools which kept falling in the dyke. There was a lot of fun and friendly banter involved in the construction which made the project an enjoyable experience  for all concerned and provided the catalyst to drive it to completion.

The fence is one of the many tasks associated with the objective of bringing Thornton station back on line. The plans are formulated by the Poulton and Wyre Trust [PWT] and implemented by the Poulton and Wyre Railway Society [PWRS].
