Another big leap forward this month with the reinstallation of two big lumps of the restoration, the front and rear buffer beams which weigh in at a mere 2.4 and 3.4 Tons respectively.

After the scaffolding was taken down at the front and rear end of the loco, the buffer beams were lifted into place and bolted up within a few hours. This was due to the loan of a suitable sized forklift truck and the dedication and hard work of the team.

Well done to them!

The fitting of the couplings and cleaning up the buffers ready for the red oxide and then primer coat is underway. A coat of primer can be seen on the rear buffer.

The clutch assembly was lifted with the aid of a chain block to support it whilst everything was bolted in place.

The first motion shaft was relocated after coating the splines and the thrust bearing slider was fitted into the centre of the clutch pressure plate.

The next step will be to fit the first motion shaft support bearing and clutch release assembly.

We have decided to replace a 600 mm square, 6 mm thick piece of the footplate by the right hand drivers door which would normally be hidden under the cab floor.

Why you ask, well all the lads know it was corroded and there unanimous decision was that it must be replaced so we can say that the loco is perfect and 100% sound.
