The weeds on the Thornton station site have been on the increase lately, so, in order to make it as presentable as possible prior to the summer planting taking place for the Thornton in bloom competition , it was suggested that a day should be arranged for a special effort by all available PWRS volunteers to carry out a mass weeding exercise.

I am pleased to say that a large number turned up on Saturday 12th May and we made great strides into the task in hand.

Working in small groups on the track and on both platforms we were able to clear from the Station entrance up to the storage container, which gives a very good impression looking from Station Road up the track.

This is the view most people see and will help our cause in showcasing our achievements so far with the restoration of the railway.

Poulton and Wyre Railway Society are involved in the Thornton village contribution to the “Britain in Bloom” project. As part of the budget provided by Wyre Council we have been allocated plants for Thornton Station from their Ashdell nurseries for our contribution to the Community effort.

The planting will be carried out for us by youngsters from Baines Endowed School, under the supervision of their teachers and PWRS Committee members, as part of their education and our working with and on behalf of the community.

The competition will be judged later, probably in early July, so we may need to have another tidy up just before then, and I would have no hesitation in making a further request for help because of the support received.

I would like, on behalf of the Thornton Station Co-ordinators, to personally thank everyone who came along to help on this day for their efforts. It was a very successful example of how the teamwork displayed can achieve good results.
