I was asked by Mrs. Margaret Woodward, a teacher at Baines Endowed School Thornton, if the Poulton and Wyre Railway Society could assist by providing a presentation about Thornton Station and the railway line from Poulton to Fleetwood to her 32 pupils in Class 5. The children are doing a project about the railway which runs next to their school and used to service their local Community. |
| David Evans gave an excellent talk to the children on the history of the railway and the station, which was illustrated by a slideshow from archive photographs of various locations. Dave and I then took the party of staff and pupils on a visit of the station site and walked along the platform showing them where the signal box, footbridge, canopy supports etc. had been. | |
| They were able to see the work we have done in restoring the station including the refurbished ticket office and the replacement fencing and gates. The children were very enthusiastic and interested in the railway and asked many questions of us during the visit. They were also very excited about the plans for the possibility of trains returning to the line in the future. |
The culmination of their study project is to produce an advertising leaflet for the railway and the train service and we have been asked to judge the best one, which we will hopefully be able to feature on the website in the future. All in all we spent a very pleasant afternoon being able to help the School and hopefully spreading information of our project into the Community through the children. |
