The Poulton and Wyre Railway Society are working hard on a number of projects including: The success of each current and future project is directly attributed the PWRS volunteer workforce. A hardcore of the membership continually gives up their time to lead (in particular) the work at Thornton Station. Job satisfaction is something which our volunteers are always achieving. For example, members of the public often stop to thank the nearest member for the work they and the various teams are doing in reclaiming the site from nature and making the site less magnetic to anti-social behaviour. It’s not often in a local community that an individual can give something back which can be visibly enjoyed by all – it really does give you a buzz when you stand back at the end of a session to see what you and your colleagues have achieved. In particular we are looking for volunteers to assist with the rebuild of Wennington Signal Box and the restoration of the L&Y carriage. If you are looking for a new challenge and feel you can give up some of your personal time to assist then please contact Dennis Goy

or call 01253 823800. The locations of both projects are close to the Thornton Station site and are easily accessible using public or private transport. The following skills are pertinent to both projects: Team Leading Abilities, Administration, Carpentry, Cataloguing and Indexing, Painting, Working from Plan, General Restoration and Glazing. Don’t worry if you don’t have firsthand experience of any of the skills mentioned team leaders are on hand to provide tutoring and advice. New members and volunteers are always welcome. There are jobs and activities for all so don’t worry if you are not as physically able as you used to be. As well as the manual tasks there is also light gardening, painting, sanding and indexing if the many artefacts we have uncovered when cutting vegetation back. In essence there is something for everyone, young or old. The only pre-requisite is that you MUST become a member of the PWRS in order to be insured when working of the site. Junior membership is available to those 17 or under. Juniors are welcome on site however so long are permission is granted by a parent and young children are welcome so long as they are accompanied by a parent with society membership. A membership form can be downloaded from here (click the link).
