L&Y Carriage Underframe

Our L & Y Carriage requires a rolling underframe as part of its restoration.

The carriage originally had a 6 wheel underframe, but as 6 wheel underframes are extremely rare now, it was decided that an alternative underframe in the form of a 4 wheel tube wagon was the next best thing.

The tube wagon that we acquired is the correct dimensions 32' long x 8' wide, although it required all of the upper metal structure removing.

The current situation is that all of the upper metal structure has been removed. The brake system requires removing and overhauling and then the rust on the underframe can be cleaned off before being painted.

A temporary housing was erected to allow work to proceed during Winter.

Scale Drawings

As part of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway carriage rolling underframe modifications, a set of scale drawings have been made by society member Richard Hoggart. These scale drawings will be a useful aid to the restoration of the carriage.
