Why not come and volunteer at the Poulton & Wyre Railway?

We look after two closed railway stations at Thornton and Burn Naze, the railway site at Jameson Road in Fleetwood, and have a small collection of rolling stock under restoration at NPL Thornton.

How Can I Help?

There are many ways you can become involved and we have roles suiting each person's abilities and wishes. Additionally, you can attend as little or as much as you want.

Each of the sites need regular maintenance such as painting and repairing fences and keeping platforms / sites and gardens tidy.

Some of our volunteers are restoring the items of rolling stock so that they can be used again in the future.

Not All Manual Labour

Perhaps you have been put off by some of the volunteering roles being quite manual? However, there are many other ways you can contribute to the aims of the Society.

We are also looking for people to help with the administration and running of the Society.

Conversely, if you are interested in manual work, but worry you lack the skills required, training can also be provided for much of what we do.

Our existing team of volunteers are doing a great job, but would welcome your help and support.

When Do We Meet?

Our regular volunteering days are Wednesdays and Saturdays, but there is often more going on for those who want to keep busy. Attendance and involvement is up to you. Interested? Fill in our online volunteer form.

Children

The Society are happy to provide opportunities for children under the age of eighteen to enjoy their membership, but all children must be accompanied by and will be the responsibility of their parent or guardian when on site.

To meet our insurance requirements, their parent or guardian will also need to sign up for membership.

Potential Roles

Note, some of our volunteers do not restrict themselves to one role, but help out in several areas as and when required.

Station Sites

Roles at Thornton and Burn Naze include:

• General site maintenance
• Repairing and painting fences
• Keeping platforms and track bed tidy
• Weeding and care of gardens
• Selling logs to raise funds for Society funds

NPL Site

Roles at our NPL Site in Thornton include:

• General site maintenance
• Rolling stock restoration
• Carpentry, including repairing wooden carriage bodies
• Painting rolling stock and buildings
• Servicing engines
• Vehicle repairs and overhaul
• Preparing logs for selling to raise funds

Note, existing skills always welcome, but training can also be provided for much of the above.

Administration

Non-manual roles include:

• Fund raising such as applying for grants or seeking donations
• Assisting our Treasurer with managing day to day Society income and expenditure on projects
• Preparing a regular magazine or newsletter for circulation to members
• Helping document our strategy and prepare a business plan
• Publicity dealing with local media channels and the railway press, along with producing updates for social media
• Museum and archiving as we look to document and display our various artifacts collected over the years

Most of the administration roles can be worked on from home.

However, it would be necessary for you to regularly visit our other sites to link up with team leaders, discuss matters and obtain project updates.
